Hanoi Opera House

Hoa Lo Prison (Hanoi Hilton)

The Hoa Lo Prison was built by the French during their colonisation, and it used to house Vietnamese prisoners, and afterwards prisoners of war from the U.S. Most parts of the prison were demolished, but the remaining parts were converted into a museum, where visitors will get to see the portrayal of the prisoners’ lives back then.

Halong Bay

Halong Bay, being one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, makes the surrounding view well worth the visit. It is surrounded by many natural features such as small islets, caves, limestone island and even jungles. Thus, you can expect to be amazed by the beauty that mother nature presented to us.

Some alternative travelling options:

  • If you have booked a tour beforehand, chances are they would have prepared the transportation needed for you to get there already, so be sure to confirm the details with them.
  • Buses – The two bus stations nearby the hotel where you get to buy bus tickets to the Halong Bay are the Gia Lam bus station (16 minutes by car from the hotel) and the Luong Yen bus station (14 minutes by car from the hotel).
  • You could also get a ride on the shuttle buses provided by local tour operators from the Old Quarter of Hanoi.
  • There are also ‘tourist bus’ that leaves to Halong Bay from the center of Hanoi everyday at about 8.00am. The meeting point for this bus is in front of the Opera House.
  • If you don’t mind the cost, you could always get a seaplane from Hanoi to Halong Bay, and it is only about 45 minutes away.

Tips: If you are planning on taking a cruise in Halong Bay, it is always better to book them in advance to ensure a spot. But if you haven’t, there are also bookings that can be done on the spot either in the Bai Chay harbour near the Halong Bay or in Hanoi, around the Old Quarter or the Hoan Kiem Lake.


You might want to consider booking an overnight cruise so that you will get to enjoy the view there at different times of the day. Also, you won’t have to rush through the trip so you can let yourself relax.

Renting a car here would require you to show your passport and international driving license. However some native licenses in common languages might be accepted.

Tip1: There are certain attractions that are located near each other, making it accessible through walking as well. That is, if you are fond of walking instead of getting a car ride.

Tip2: As the traffic in Hanoi might seem chaotic for visitors from other country, it might be best to rent a car with a driver, or rent a cab instead of driving yourself.

Tip3: When crossing the road, you have to learn to be more fearless. When you are ready and there’s enough space for you to start walking, walk at a constant speed across the road and the drivers on the road will adjust their speed accordingly.
